Unique Ways to Increase Your Family Connection

In the “go, go, go” world we live in, it’s hard to find time to do it all. Family connection is so important, but with clashing schedules and a mile-long to-do list, it can feel like you have no time to squeeze in a family dinner or game night, no matter how hard you try.

Luckily, you can still have those precious family moments even when things are chaotic—you just have to get creative! Whether your family is near or far, let’s explore some unique ways to make time for the most important people in your life.

Utilize technology.

In-person contact is always best, but there are times when this simply isn’t an option. Thankfully, were now more connected than ever thanks to the technology in our pockets, on our wrists, and in virtually (ha!) every corner of our lives. Want to talk to your son? Pick up your phone and call. Need to get a quick message to your spouse? You can type out a text in seconds. Even if we’re miles apart, technology keeps our family connection close. Here are some of our favorite ways to make the most of these platforms:

  • Zoom™: a popular video chatting platform that makes it easy to connect with family all around the world. Try using it to host a virtual family dinner or game night!
  • Google™ Photos: ideal for easily sharing photos with each other. Send pictures of a soccer game or school play to family who couldn’t attend!
  • Marco Polo™: often referred to as a “video walkie talkie,” this app combines texting, video chats, and social media. Send each other messages to check in or just say hi—an easy way to keep in touch!

Even if you’re not a fan of technology, it could be that missing link between you and staying more connected to your people!

Start a family book club.

One of the best things about books is the power they hold to bring people together. Finding common ground in storylines unifies us sometimes better than anything in real life ever could. What if we were to utilize reading to help strengthen our family connection?

You don’t have to live under the same roof to try this one … the beauty of a book club is that it can happen virtually, too! Pick a book (choose from this list if you’re having trouble deciding), have everyone read a chapter or two per week, and set aside some time to talk about it from the comfort of your living room, over the phone, or even through a FaceTime call. This is an easy way to build connections, hear differing perspectives, and learn new things as a family!

Get out of your comfort zone.

The best memories are made when you try new things, so how about getting the whole crew involved? Don’t worry, we’re not suggesting that you need to do something huge like going skydiving or swimming with sharks (but hey, if you’re a family of daredevils, these things might be right up your ally!). 🦈

Instead, start by signing up for a cooking class, trying a new family workout style (find some inspiration here), or taking a road trip to a place that none of you have been before. There’s something so special about experiencing things for the first time with the people you love, so when the opportunity comes up, take advantage of it!

We all wish we could gather around the dinner table each night, but when that’s not possible, it’s nice to know that you have options to keep your family connection as strong as ever. You might just wind up with some new traditions while you’re at it!
